The Community Conservation Partnership (CCP) brings together parish representatives from the Manhood Peninsula, to collectively preserve and build on the Fixing and Linking Our Wetlands (FLOW) Project.
AIMS
To work together with all 11 parishes on the Manhood Peninsula, to ensure the long term conservation aims of the FLOW Project are met. To encourage and support residents to care for their local wetland spaces and develop other projects to protect wildlife on their doorstep.
BACKGROUND
The FLOW Project worked to restore and reconnect wetlands across the Manhood Peninsula, from March 2016 to June 2021, with the aim of improving natural flood management and increasing wildlife habitat. Reports were regularly submitted by FLOW to the Manhood Peninsula Partnership, which documented the restoration process in each parish. At the end of the project, final parish reports were produced with action plans, which detailed the ongoing wetland conservation work needed.
Over the course of the project, working relationships were established with local parish councils and an active volunteer base was maintained. This community network formed the basis of the CCP and included councilor representation from the parish councils of Birdham, Hunston, North Mundham and West Itchenor. It was decided that the partnership should continue beyond the end of the FLOW Project to manage ongoing conservation work and build upon FLOW’s achievements.
METHODS
The CCP currently includes councilor representation from four parishes; Birdham, Hunston, North Mundham and West Itchenor, and met throughout 2019 to monitor the legacy aims that would be set out in the parish action plans, developed by FLOW. Equipment has been distributed to the parishes, to support the implementation of these plans.
After FLOW’s end in June 2021, the CCP aims to continue to produce parish wetland management reports for the Mahood Peninsula Partnership. The CCP is currently working to recruit representatives from the remaining parishes on the peninsula, to provide local mentorship to volunteers.
